Although fictional characters have long dominated the reception of literature, films, television programs, comics, and other media products, only recently have they begun to attract their due attention in literary and media theory. The book systematically surveys today´s diverse and at times conflicting theoretical perspectives on fictional character, spanning research on topics such as the differences between fictional characters and real persons, the ontological status of characters, the strategies of their representation and characterization, the psychology of their reception, as well as their specific forms and constellations in - and across - different media, from the book to the internet.

    • The post-conflict election in Côte d’Ivoire in November 2010 was meant to conclude the country’s transition from war-to-peace, to mark the beginning of a new era of peace and promote democratisation. Instead, the election triggered a military stand-off between the two major presidential candidates and plunged the country back into civil war. This book analyses the factors which allowed for the post-conflict election in Côte d’Ivoire in 2010 to ruin the country’s peace process. The analysis is based on the conceptual framework of Höglund et al., which brings together most of the major findings about post-conflict elections that have emerged in academic literature so far. The author argues that a whole range of conflict-generating factors, including the continuity of the major political actors, unfavourable institutional circumstances and the particularly high stakes of the election, were present.

BPM 2006 was the fourth in a series of conferences that serves as a forum for researchers and practitioners in business process management. Alongside the main conference, a series of workshops facilitated the exchange of ideas and experiences among active researchers, stimulating discussions on new and emerging topics. These workshops are viewed as essential extensions of the main conference. BPM has quickly established itself as a high-quality event with a competitive selection process. The workshops included: BPD 2006 (2nd International Workshop on Business Process Design), BPI 2006 (2nd International Workshop on Business Process Intelligence), ENEI 2006 (2nd International Workshop on Enterprise and Networked Enterprises Interoperability), GPWW 2006 (2nd International Workshop on Grid and Peer-to-Peer based Workflows), DPM 2006 (International Workshop on Dynamic Process Management), and semantics4ws 2006 (Advances in Semantics for Web Services). Each workshop's program was developed by dedicated organizational teams and program committees. The calls for papers attracted 94 submissions, resulting in 40 selected papers for presentation, which are included in this volume. The success of these workshops was made possible by the voluntary efforts of many individuals.

    • The 9th East-European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems took place from September 12–15, 2005, in Tallinn, Estonia, organized by the Institute of Cybernetics and the Department of Computer Engineering at Tallinn University of Technology, along with the Moscow chapter of ACM SIGMOD. This conference aimed to disseminate outstanding research and foster collaboration between database and information systems communities from Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. It provided an international platform for presenting research on database theory, advanced DBMS technologies, and their applications in information systems. Continuing the tradition of previous ADBIS conferences held in various cities since 1997, the 2005 event featured regular sessions with technical contributions reviewed by an international Program Committee, as well as invited talks and tutorials from leading scientists. Notably, this conference introduced a satellite event, the ADMKD 2005 workshop, focused on data mining and knowledge discovery. This workshop, with its own Program Committee and proceedings, encouraged researchers and practitioners to discuss data mining research and implementation challenges, sharing experiences in developing and deploying data mining systems.
