My research into the dramatic changes in the automobile industry in Central and East European countries began in the late 1990s, stemming from my previous work on post-socialist transformation, foreign direct investment, and regional economic development. As I explored the economic impacts of foreign direct investment, I became particularly interested in the automobile sector due to its rapid transformation and significant potential for economic and regional development. This led me to conduct detailed case studies on enterprise restructuring, aiming to understand its complexities and the roles of various actors involved. To achieve this, I visited numerous automotive enterprises, particularly in the Czech Republic, where I conducted in-depth interviews with key informants. Additionally, I engaged with officials from ministries, automotive associations, and academic institutions, while also gathering secondary data. The culmination of this research is presented in this book. I am grateful for the support I received, particularly from the University Committee on Research and Creative Activity at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, which funded three fieldwork sessions in Czechia for interviews and research.
