In Deutschland war das Frühwerk von Rose Ausländer, welches sie bis 1944 geschaffen hat und auch ihre englischen Gedichte, die von 1948 bis Mitte 1956 entstanden, lange Zeit unbekannt. Erst als zwischen 1984 und 1990 das Gesamtwerk publiziert wurde, konnten sich die Leser ein Bild von den frühen Gedichten machen und es war die Dichterin selbst, die 1971 in dem Text Alles kann Motiv sein auf ihre englische Lyrik hinwies. Nach mehrjährigem Schweigen überraschte ich mich eines Abends beim Schreiben englischer Lyrik. [...] Viele jener Gedichte sind in amerikanischen Literaturzeitschriften erschienen, manche hat der Rundfunk WEVD gesendet. Warum schreibe ich seit 1956 wieder deutsch? Mysteriös, wie sie erschienen war, verschwand die englische Muse. Erst im Nachlass der Dichterin fanden sich 193 englische Gedichte und etwa 50 nicht zu Ende geführte Fassungen. Dieses Buch und die gleichnamige Ausstellung spüren den Gründen für das englische Schreiben von Rose Ausländer nach, zeigen Manuskripte und Typoskripte, verweisen auf amerikanische Vorbilder, versuchen eine Einordnung der Bedeutung des neugefundenen Stils des Schreibens nach der Rückkehr in die deutsche Muttersprache und zeigen, welchen Einfluss die amerikanische Poetin Marianne Moore durch die Zusammenarbeit während einer Writers Conference und durch den folgenden Briefwechsel auf diese Entwicklung nahm.
