Sint Johannes van Damascus was een Syrische christelijke monnik en priester, gevierd als een polyhistor wiens bijdragen recht, theologie, filosofie en muziek omvatten. Voor zijn wijding diende hij als hoofdbeheerder voor de moslimkalief in Damascus. Zijn geschriften die het christelijk geloof uitleggen en zijn hymnen worden dagelijks gebruikt in Oost-Christelijke kloosters over de hele wereld. De Katholieke Kerk beschouwt hem als een Doctor van de Kerk, bijzonder bekend om zijn geschriften over de Tenhemelopneming van Maria.
