Set in a world where Omorfians inhabit four distinct communities, each safeguarding a mystical viribus tree, the story explores themes of purpose and sacrifice. With a fleeting lifespan of five years, the Omorfians adhere to cultural rules without grasping their true significance. Their understanding deepens when the Sapiens from the South start abducting them, forcing the Omorfians to confront their identity and the importance of their guardianship.
The narrative follows Leios and Emely as they grapple with the fallout from a failed assassination attempt on the overlord of Oever, resulting in the loss of their companion Etham and Mathius's capture. As they rush back to Ignosi to prepare for impending retaliation, a young Sapien named Memphis finds himself trapped in the palace. To survive, he fabricates a story about aiding the Omorfians, leading to a conflict between his moral compass and the desperate need for self-preservation amidst growing suspicion from those around him.
The story follows Overlord Aart Xerxes, who seeks to dominate rival kingdom Islaag with the aid of the newly awakened Omorfians. However, his ambitions are challenged by a secret alliance formed by members of his entourage, including his wife's brother Memphis. The tension between Xerxes' quest for power and the conspirators' efforts to thwart him creates a gripping conflict that drives the narrative forward.
After failing to assassinate the overlord of Oever, Leios and Emely have lost their home member, Etham, Aadya can no longer speak, and Mathius has been captured. Devastated, Leios and his friends hurry back to Ignosi in preparation for the overlord's retaliation. As they do so, the young Sapien, Memphis, is caught at the palace and, to save himself, lies about helping the Omorfians. Some are suspicious of him, while others seek to use him for a purpose, and Memphis is torn between doing what's right and doing what he must to stay alive. Meanwhile, as the power of his last sacrifice flows through is veins, a power like never before, the overlord becomes more devious in his plans to conquer the adjacent kingdom and makes a bargain with the imprisoned Mathius. In his naivety and hopefulness, Mathius tells the overlord of the Bion, the birthplace of Omorfians. But with the Kentrozois only days away, thousands will be birthed at the Bion-thousands innocent to the evils of their world.
