Born into a middle-class Sarasvat Brahmin family, Dr. Sharada Kabir met Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar as a patient and married him on 15 April 1948, becoming Savita Ambedkar. From their wedding until his death on 6 December 1956, she supported him in significant achievements such as drafting the Constitution of India, framing the Hindu Code Bill, and writing celebrated works like The Buddha and His Dhamma, while also leading millions of Dalits into Buddhism. After his passing, she faced obscurity due to some of Ambedkar's followers viewing her as a threat to their ambitions. She re-emerged in 1970, dedicating herself to the welfare of the Dalit community, a mission her husband championed. Her autobiography, Dr Ambedkaraanchya Sahavaasaat, first published in Marathi in 1990, offers a valuable and intimate account of her life with Ambedkar. This English translation by Nadeem Khan reveals a different side of the iconic leader, showcasing him as a romantic figure who wrote love letters, dictated her attire, cooked delicious mutton curry, played the violin, and even dabbled in sculpting. This work humanizes Ambedkar in a way that no other has, presenting him as a tenacious fighter, outstanding scholar, and iconic leader of the twentieth century.
