Vanessa Bell was een centrale figuur binnen de literaire en artistieke kring van Bloomsbury, een kunstenares wiens werk wordt gekenmerkt door gedurfde kleuren en een gewaagd reductionisme. Haar vroege artistieke aanleg en formele opleiding legden de basis voor een levenslange artistieke verkenning. Na de dood van haar vader verhuisde Bell met haar broers en zussen naar Bloomsbury, waar hun huis een centrum werd voor onconventioneel sociaal leven en intellectuele discussies die de Bloomsburygroep vormden. Haar kunst werd diepgaand beïnvloed door het Franse modernisme, met name het Post-Impressionisme, wat tot uiting kwam in haar moedige kleurkeuzes en vereenvoudigde vormen. Hoewel ze later terugkeerde naar meer traditionele methoden, behield haar werk altijd een krachtig kleurgebruik, waarvoor ze tegenwoordig misschien wel het meest bewonderd wordt.
