Thirteen-year-old John goes to live and work on a Mennonite farm while his father is fighting in Europe during World War II. A group of German prisoners of war arrives to work on the same farm. John gets impatient with Sarah, who doesn't believe in war. John tries to remain loyal to his father, but when a German prisoner encourages his art and talent, he must make some difficult decisions.
