Struggling with undisclosed injuries, Matt Winsford seeks solace at Coombe Cottage near Dartmoor, aiming to focus on his painting. His quiet retreat is disrupted when he meets Kate Lethbridge, a spirited horse rider, who invites him to paint her horse. This encounter leads him to the nearby stables and Lidstone Manor, a training center for young offenders, intertwining his recovery journey with new relationships and challenges that may impact his healing process.

An unusual grey fox is hunted into the little Devon valley of Ravenscoombe, bringing with it a series of misfortune which old Tacky Bowden attributes to the traditional bad luck associated with foxes of that colour. The efforts to rid the valley of the animal draw together the fortunes of Tacky, a lonely ex-farmer; Clegg Granger, a newcomer to farming; and Josh Huccaby, the local landowner and Master of the hunt.
