Levi maakte zelf de keuze voor deze oorspronkelijk in '81 uitgegeven bundel uit zijn oeuvre kort proza, dat hij sinds '75 schreef. 'Lilith' bestaat uit ij delen: 'Onvoltooid verleden tijd': verhalen en personen uit zijn concentratiekamptijd, zoals we ze kennen uit 'Is dit een mens?', maar nu vrijer en meer literair weergegeven. 'Voltooid toekomende tijd': toekomstfantasieën. Hier blijkt schrijvers grote betrokkenheid bij en inzicht in techniek en wetenschap. 'Onvoltooid toekomende tijd': eigentijdse verhalen, geïnspireerd op ware gebeurtenissen en personen, maar subtiel omgewerkt tot fictie. De grote verschillen tussen deze ij delen zijn frappant.
