Al-Farabi was een gerenommeerd filosoof en jurist wiens werk zich uitstrekte over politieke filosofie, metafysica, ethiek en logica. Hij was ook wetenschapper, kosmoloog, wiskundige en muziekgeleerde. Vereerd in de Arabische filosofische traditie als "de Tweede Meester" na Aristoteles, wordt hij gecrediteerd voor het behoud van originele Griekse teksten door zijn commentaren en verhandelingen tijdens de Middeleeuwen.
