Abandoned Gary, Indiana: City of the Century
Abandoned South Florida: Echoes of the Past
Abandoned Montgomery: Ruins of the Confederate Capitol
    • Montgomery, Alabama, is the birthplace of the Confederacy and the site of many protests during the Civil Rights Movement. A constant battleground of morals and politics, the city has been in a downward spiral for decades. Its buildings are a reminder of its storied, and in many ways, controversial past. David Bulit, a long-time photographer and historian, guides readers through the city's lesser known history. Abandoned Montgomery features the house on Goldthwaite, a mansion built for a U.S. marshal, located in what was once a wealthy and thriving neighborhood; the Grove Court Apartments, a complex built to fill the influx of people in the city following World War II; the Sayre Street School, a once historic school turned funeral home; Capitol City Dry Cleaners, part of a superfund site which contaminated part of the city's groundwater; the town of Spectre, a movie set used for the movie Big Fish; and much more.

    • South Florida is known for its beaches, nightclubs, and party atmosphere, but underneath is a history of corruption, drugs, and violence. For those structures that have withstood the harsh perils of time, they have been destroyed by man's ever-growing quest for money. In Abandoned South Florida , David Bulit will take you through a series of locations that locals tend to have forgotten about or would rather not discuss. You'll venture through a church part of the cult the Nation of Yahweh; a prison which was the site of one of the largest prison escapes in Florida's history; a once popular hotel turned squatter's paradise; a shopping mall which became a haven for the homeless and bats alike; the last tuberculosis hospital in the state of Florida; and many more places that have been consumed by the jaws of development.

Abandoned South Florida: Echoes of the Past
    • Gary, Indiana, was a prosperous steel city, serving as a testing ground for the assimilation and Americanization of immigrants. Although plagued with racial strife, industrial pollution, and political corruption, the city thrived into the 1960s. The city rapidly declined over the past few decades due to the growing overseas competitiveness in the steel industry resulting in mass layoffs from the steel mills in the area. As jobs dried up, crime went up and white flight soon began. The voting in of one of the nation's first big city black mayors in an area full of racial segregation and strife sped up the process. The city is now a mere shadow of its former self, once known as the City of the Century and now regarded as the nation's murder capital, drug capital, and most miserable city. Not many people visit Gary nowadays, but those that do are usually there to view the remains. Photographer David Bulit sets out to highlight the lost architectural gems and forgotten history of Gary, Indiana. Book jacket.
