Rabelais heeft deze verhalen samengebracht en aangevuld met kritiek op de Kerk en de samenleving. Zeer bekend werden de negentiende-eeuwse Franse uitgaven met illustraties van Gustave Doré, die ook in deze uitgave te vinden zijn.
