    Pier Angelo Fiorentino was een toneelschrijver, journalist, dichter en vertaler die zich tijdens de Risorgimento engageerde in het politieke leven. Hij blonk uit als muziek- en theatercriticus voor grote Franse kranten, en zijn vertaling van Dante's Goddelijke Komedie naar het Frans is een opmerkelijk werk. Hoewel hij samenwerkte met Alexandre Dumas, werd zijn eigen auteurschap ten onrechte aan Dumas toegeschreven, wat leidde tot misplaatste overtuigingen over zijn bijdrage aan bepaalde beroemde werken.
