KC Randall erfde haar humor van haar vader, haar fantasie van haar moeder en haar liefde voor lezen van vrijwel iedereen met wie ze genetisch verwant is. Haar familie vertelde vroeger verhalen om de tijd te doden tijdens lange autoritten, omdat ze onderhoudender waren dan wat dan ook op de radio, en zo leerde ze woordspelingen waarderen. Pas toen ze bijna dertig was en een enorm populair youngadultroman las, realiseerde ze zich: "Hé, dit kan ik ook."
