Sie wurden in der Zahnheilkunde zum Auffüllen von Knochendefekten, Wurzelreparaturmaterialien, apikalen Füllmaterialien, Perforationsversiegelung, als endodontische Versiegelung und als Hilfsmittel bei der Regeneration verwendet. Sie haben bestimmte Vorteile wie Biokompatibilität, Nicht-Toxizität, Dimensionsstabilität und vor allem bei endodontischen Anwendungen, da sie bioinert sind. Sie haben eine Ähnlichkeit mit Hydroxyapatit, einer intrinsischen osteoleitenden Aktivität und haben die Fähigkeit, regenerative Reaktionen im menschlichen Körper zu induzieren. In der Endodontie können sie grob in Calciumphosphat/Tricalcium/Hydroxyapatit-basiert, Calciumsilikat-basiert oder Mischungen aus Calciumsilikat und Phosphaten eingeteilt werden.
