Voordat hij naar Fuller kwam, was hij missionaris in Mexico, voornamelijk werkzaam in theologisch onderwijs. Van Engen doceerde ook missiologie aan het Western Theological Seminary in Michigan en was van 1998 tot 1999 voorzitter van de Generale Synode van de Gereformeerde Kerk van Amerika. Hij is de oprichtende president en CEO van Latin American Christian Ministries, Inc.
