Horatio Holmes heeft een lange weg afgelegd sinds zijn dagen op de Longtides basisschool. Sindsdien heeft hij geleerd bugel te spelen (slecht), heeft hij gewerkt als schrijver van competitieve wiskundeproblemen en heeft hij zelfs in Hamlet de rol gespeeld van het personage waarnaar hij is vernoemd. Op andere gebieden is hij nog steeds dezelfde als altijd: een fervent lezer, een nastrevende van gerechtigheid en iemand die van zijn hotdogs met mosterd houdt. Zijn schrijven vertoont vaak een speelse geest naast een diepe zorg voor gerechtigheid.
