Daniel Garrison Brinton was een Amerikaanse arts en chirurg die in het leger van de Unie diende. Zijn academische carrière richtte zich op etnologie, archeologie en Amerikaanse linguïstische studies. Hij bekleedde professoraat aan de Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences en later aan de Universiteit van Pennsylvania, waar hij tot zijn dood doceerde. Zijn werk richtte zich op de studie en het begrip van de inheemse volkeren van Amerika en hun culturen.
