In Sodom en Gomorra, Boek IV van Proust's romancyclus Op zoek naar de verloren tijd, wordt de passie van baron de Charlus ontleed. Zijn homofilie (Sodom) dwingt hem ertoe zijn aristocratische milieu te verlaten, terwijl men in het burgerlijke milieu waar hij terechtkomt de aristocratie benijdt. Ook de liefde van de verteller voor Albertine wordt ontleed. Marcel lijdt onder de vlinderachtige trouweloosheid van Albertine en hij vreest dat hij alleen op haar verliefd is uit angst haar te verliezen.
