John Galsworthy Boeken

The third part of Galsworthy's concluding trilogy concerning the Forsyte family, which was published posthumously under the title The End of the Chapter or The Last Chapter.

In this final volume of The Forsyte Saga Galsworthy writes about the lives and loves of the Cherrell family, cousins of the Forsytes. For centuries, the Cherrell sons have left their home of Condaford Grange to serve the state as soldiers, clergymen and administrators, but the 1930s bring uncertainty in a world of rapidly altering morals and unemployment. Galsworthy's portrayal of the effect of political change on individuals show him as a great social novelist as well as the author of one of the most gripping family sagas ever written.
Jon Forsyte is back. After years living in America with his mother Irene, he is excited to be home and can't wait to show off his roots to his new bride. When Fleur Forsyte, now Fleur Mont, his first love, hears of his arrival, she doesn't know what to feel. She's married too, though, with a little boy so there's no reason why they all can't meet as friends. But feelings so strong are not easily contained. And when their passion is rekindled, no one can halt the devastating events that follow - the secret culmination of an old, old story...

John Galsworthy OM (1867-1933) was an English novelist and playwright. He is viewed as one of the first writers of the Edwardian era; challenging in his works some of the ideals of society depicted in the preceeding literature of Victorian England. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1932. Notable works include The Forsyte Saga (1906-1921) and its sequels, A Modern Comedy and End of the Chapter. From the Four Winds was Galsworthy's first published work in 1897, a collection of short stories. These, and several subsequent works, were published under the pen name John Sinjohn and it would not be until The Island Pharisees (1904) that he would begin publishing under his own name. His first play, The Silver Box (1906) became a success, and he followed it up with The Man of Property (1906), the first in the Forsyte trilogy. Along with other writers of the time such as Shaw his plays addressed the class system and social issues, two of the best known being Strife (1909) and The Skin Game (1920).
In this second part of John Galworthy's trilogy of love, power, money and family feuding, a new generation has arrived to divide the Forsyte clan with society scandals and conflicting passions

The three novels which make up The Forsyte Saga chronicle the ebbing social power of the commercial upper-middle class Forsyte family between 1886 and 1920. Galsworthy's masterly narrative examines not only their fortunes but also the wider developments within society, particularly the changing position of women. This is the only critical edition of the work available, with Notes that explain contemporary artistic and literary allusions and define the slang of the time.

Set against the backdrop of a country house, the narrative unfolds with colorful and intricate maneuvers, where each character pursues a different goal. Young George Pendyce is entangled in an unhappy love affair with the carefree Mrs. Helen Bellew. The socially awkward Gregory Vigils, for reasons he scarcely understands, seeks Helen's divorce from her husband. The staunchly conservative landowner Mr. Horace Pendyce fights with all the tyranny he can muster to protect his estate and maintain his "face." His sensitive wife, Mrs. Margery Pendyce, strives to uncover the true intentions of the enigmatic Mrs. Bellew to free her son from hopeless entanglements. Ultimately, life in the country house continues with its busy comfort, moral cleanliness, the interplay of fresh air and floral warmth, complete mental tranquility, and a willful ignorance of any form of suffering.

"The Patrician" is an early work by John Galsworthy that explores the conflict between duty and love, law and freedom, and rigid conventions versus new forms of life. Through two parallel destinies, Galsworthy, a master of human psychology, tells the story of a love that is threatened, suffering, yielding, and ultimately victorious. Lord Miltoun, a patrician and a product of England's traditions, has just been elected to Parliament and loves a beautiful married woman, one of Galsworthy's most striking characters, who is not divorced. This sets the stage for the central conflict: can the hero, as a representative and advocate of established family values, act in his private life against what he has publicly defined as his life's mission? Why was he elected? Will he be able to play this hypocritical role? His quiet, subdued, yet passionate love is put to the test, and amidst the romantic turmoil, the complexities of the old and new worlds crystallize. The narrative captivates with its persuasive power, vividness, and the suggestion of words that transform shadows into three-dimensional beings, full of passion, tragedy, and, above all, real life.

The monumental family saga of English Nobel laureate John Galsworthy has often been compared to Thomas Mann's *Buddenbrooks*. Spanning four generations, the story of the Forsyte family unfolds against the backdrop of the Victorian era, characterized by decadence and hypocrisy that permeate the possession-obsessed bourgeoisie.
