Название романа идёт из эпизода, в котором мальчик мечтает сделать аттракцион с дрессированными мышами, изображающими взятие Измаила. Название по разъяснению самого автора ироничное, на него указывает и «говорящее» имя главного героя Александр Васильевич (как у Суворова), и любимая фраза отца героя морячка-подводника из части «Эпилог»: "Эту жизнь, Мишка, нужно брать, как крепость!" Роман посвящён Франческе Штёклин — второй жене писателя. Построение романа довольно сложное, сюжетные линии обрываются и начинаются заново, вступлением к ним часто служит судебная речь, которая как бы сбивается на подробный рассказ о деле или личности. Согласно объяснению самого Михаила Шишкина, некто собирается написать книгу, а когда сюжет начинает прокручиваться, он бросает и начинает писать заново. В конце концов, все сюжеты отбрасываются, и прорывается настоящая жизнь автора. И действительно, книга содержит довольно много деталей жизни самого писателя: детство в коммуналке в Староконюшенном переулке, отец моряк-подводник, брак с швейцаркой, у которой погиб первый муж, рождение сына в Швейцарии от Франчески и др. Герой уезжает из России, которая видится в финале как кошмарный сон, а освободиться от неё нельзя. Согласно объяснению самого Шишкина, это текст о его жизни в России и, хотя ситуация там меняется, глубинные отношения между людьми остались те же. Автор определил жанр книги как «тотальный роман», то есть роман обо всём. Согласно его разъяснениям, во «Взятии Измаила» персонажем является не герой, а стиль. В самом деле, в книге происходит переплетение не только рассказов, но и стилей, соседствует высокий, казённый, непристойный, учёные цитаты на латыни. Книга также полна аллюзиями на Чехова, Льва Толстого (особенно «Воскресение»), Владимира Набокова, Сашу Соколова, Кантемира, речей знаменитых адвокатов, как Плевако, советские судебные документы, как расстрельный приговор Г.Г. Шпету, русский фольклор, рассказы иностранцев о России и многое другое. В книге также множество цитат. Частые чередования стиля и использование старинного языка разных слоёв напоминает «Улисс» Джойса.
