The world is left reeling when Ransome Airways Flight 189 to New York inexplicably falls from the sky, crashing into the Bristol estuary. Of the 600 passengers on the plane, there are no survivors. A massive operation commences to recover the bodies and clues from the wreckage, under the watchful eye of the Ministry of Justice and other government agencies. Meanwhile coroner Jenny Cooper finds herself responsible for the remains of a fisherman, whose boat appears to have been struck by the wreckage; and drawn into the strange fate of a little girl - Amy Patterson - a passenger from the plane whose largely unmarked body was mysteriously discovered lying beside him. Under pressure from Amy Patterson's grieving mother and opposed by those at the very highest levels of government, Jenny must race against time to seek the truth behind this terrible disaster, before it can happen again.
