Le cousin Pons is Balzac’s last novel in his grand series ‘La comédie humaine’. Pons is an elderly man, conductor of a theatre orchestra. Pons is dying. His inheritance is meant for his friend Schmucke. But some other people get their hands on Pons’s money and possessions. The novel has many beautiful characterizations, a well-drawn social context of the French middle class in the first half of the nineteenth century, it has a variety of emotions, and excitement in the development of the plot.
