Kniha měla oslňující úspěch už při svém prvním vydání v r. 1862, vyšla v nesčetných vydáních, byla mnohokrát zfilmována a v posledních letech se stala i předlohou k úspěšnému muzikálu.

V devatenáctém století se na těžké galeje mohl dostat třeba člověk, který zcizil bochník obyčejného chleba. Pokud se z nucených prací pokusil uprchnout, za kus pečiva pak musel v nelidských podmínkách lámat kámen víc než dvacet let. Takový byl i smutný osud Jeana Valjeana. Po propuštění z vězení se proto rozhodl být ochráncem těch nejchudších a nejslabších, jenže minulost kriminálníka a fanatický policejní úředník Javert jsou mu neustále v patách… Bídníci jsou asi nejznámějším francouzským románem všech dob. Ačkoliv se jedná o kritiku tehdejší společnosti a její povrchní morálky, i dnešní čtenář s překvapením zjistí, že se od „Valjeanových a Javertových dob“ v řadě ohledů až tak moc nezměnilo.

Któregoś dnia w prowansalskim miasteczku Digne zjawia się wypuszczony z więzienia galernik Jean Valjean. Jedyną osobą, która przyjęła go przychylnie, był biskup. Po odejściu policjantów stwierdza, że w ten sposób wykupił duszę Valjeana od sił zła i oddał Bogu. Były więzień postanawia zmienić swoje życie. Akcja przenosi się do Paryża, czterech młodzieńców żyje w wolnych związkach z czterema dziewczętami, z których jedna, Fantyna, zostaje porzucona z małą córeczką. Kobieta postanawia opuścić Paryż i szukać pracy. Zostawiła córeczkę Kozetę u przypadkowo spotkanej rodziny oberżystów z Montfermeil koło Paryża. Fantyna trafia do miasta przeżywającego prawdziwy rozkwit. Stało się tak za sprawą nieznanego nikomu przemysłowca, Madeleine'a. Otoczony powszechnym szacunkiem został merem miasta. Tylko inspektor policji Javert mu nie ufa. Jego podejrzenia zwiększają się jeszcze po tym, gdy Madeleine, chcąc ratować woźnicę Faucheleventa, podniósł na barkach ciężki wóz. Javert stwierdził wówczas, że znał tylko jednego człowieka o takiej sile: galernika nazwiskiem Valjean...

Il destino della piccola Cosette, inizialmente molto triste, poiché non c'è nulla di più straziante di un bambino che soffre per ingiustizie, cambia quando viene accolta dal padre Madeleine. Questi è un ex galeotto, Jean Valjean, la cui vita di miseria lo ha portato alle galere, ma al suo ritorno diventa un uomo buono e un protettore dei bisognosi. Z poznámek v knize: Torquemada je pro jedny krvelačníkem, katem od přirozenosti, pro druhé vizionářem, katem ze slitování. Huga přiměla k sepsání hry zejména pasáž z listů sv. Pavla: "Křesťanská láska jest moci takové, že síla její překonává sílu lidskou. Tak matka křesťanská raději bude chtíti, aby dceru její před očima upálili zaživa, než aby viděla ji býti křivověrkyní a k věčnému ohni odsouzenu." Inkvizitor ve hře zastává onu myšlenku, je apoštolem a vrahem zároveň, s klidnou myslí páše zločiny, jsa přesvědčen, že dobře činí.

Slavný historický román je živým obrazem středověké Paříže v 2. pol. 15. století za vlády Ludvíka XI. Hugo zachycuje v mohutné barvité fresce život pařížských obyvatel od žebráků, zlodějů, cikánů, studentů, měšťáků, některých představitelů šlechty a vysokého duchovenstvaaž k samotnému králi. Któregoś dnia, w czasie spaceru w Ogrodzie Luksemburskim, Mariusz spotyka młodą dziewczynę w towarzystwie starszego mężczyzny. Zachwycony jej urodą, zaczyna śledzić oboje. Zostaje dostrzeżony przez opiekuna; w rezultacie dziewczyna przestaje przychodzić do ogrodu. Nieoczekiwanie tajemnicza piękność razem z opiekunem, znanym z dobroczynności trafia do jego sąsiadów. Ci jednak szykują na bogatego filantropa pułapkę. W tym czasie zaczyna się kolejny zryw Wiosny Ludów. Gavroche i Javert dołączają do ochotników na barykadach
