Maar vooral is het een onweerstaanbare ode aan de schoonheid en kracht van de vrouw. Jorge Amado (1912-2001) wordt beschouwd als de invloedrijkste Braziliaanse schrijver. Hij werd vooral bekend door zijn romans Dona Flor en haar twee echtgenoten (1966) en Gabriela (1958) Maartje de Kort (1963) vertaalde eerder onder meer werk van José Saramago en J. Rentes de Carvalho.
