When Amos Tutuola's first novel, The Palm-Wine Drinkard, appeared in 1952, it aroused exceptional worldwide interest. Drawing on the West African Yoruba oral folktale tradition, Tutuola described the odyssey of a devoted palm-wine drinker through a nightmare of fantastic adventure. Since then, The Palm-Wine Drinkard has been translated into more than 15 languages and has come to be regarded as a masterwork of one of Africa's most influential writers. Tutuola's second novel, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, recounts the fate of mortals who stray into the world of ghosts, the heart of the tropical forest. Here, as every hunter and traveler knows, mortals venture at great peril, and it is here that a small boy is left alone.

'The Palm-Wine Drinkard' is the phantasmagorical story of an alcoholic man and his search for his dead wine tapster. As he travels through the land of the dead, he encounters a host of supernatural and often terrifying beings - among them the 'complete gentleman' who returns his body parts to their owners, the insatiable 'hungry-creature', and his own pyromaniac son.

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Amos Tutuola's second novel, was first published in 1954. It tells the tale of a small boy who wanders into the heart of a fantastical African forest, the dwelling place of innumerable wild, grotesque and terrifying beings.

Jedným z originálnych zjavov súčasnej africkej literatúry je Nigérijčan Amos Tutuola. Tvorba Amosa Tutuolu vychádza z ľudovej slovesnosti, najmä rozprávky. Autor svoje príbehy rozpráva na úrovni ľudového rozprávača, ibaže, na rozdiel od neho, ich zapisuje. Rozprávania desiatich večerov – Striga z džungle, čitateľa dozaista upútajú svojou exotickou témou – fantastickostrašidelnými rozprávkovými obrazmi mĺkvej džungle, strigy z džungle, ktorá náhodných votrelcov premieňa na sochy. Upútajú obrazmi podzemného riečneho kráľovstva, obrov i dobrodružstvami samotného rozprávača. " Je me soûlais au vin de palme depuis l'âge de dix ans. Je n'avais rien eu d'autre à faire dans la vie que de boire du vin de palme. " C'est ainsi que le narrateur, qui se nomme lui-même " Père-Des-Dieux-Qui-Peut-Tout-Faire-En-Ce-Monde ", se présente. Les 560 000 palmiers de sa plantation lui fournissaient suffisamment de vin de palme pour en boire quotidiennement plus de deux cents calebasses. Mais un jour son " malafoutier ", l'homme qui lui préparait son vin de palme, tombe du haut d'un arbre et se tue. Voilà un bien grand malheur ; impossible de trouver un " malafoutier " aussi expert que le défunt, la soif se fait sentir, et il n'a plus d'autre choix que celui de se lancer à sa recherche, jusque dans la Ville-des-Morts. Cette quête fascinante l'entraîne de la Brousse au Monde des êtres étrangers et terribles, sur le chemin des mythes et légendes yorubas. Portée par la tradition orale des griots, la langue sert l'imaginaire débridé d'un conte tendre et cocasse, dont Raymond Queneau rend ici le caractère d' " art brut ".
