This anthology contains seven texts by Kurt Blaukopf (1914-1999) that exemplify the sociological and epistemological position of this pioneer of Austrian music sociology. Blaukopf's efforts were aimed at a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach and analysis of music as a cultural phenomenon and as social practice. The primary aim of this anthology is to make Blaukopf's work better known in the English-speaking world. It offers the interested reader a fruitful analysis of the relation between music sociology and its sister disciplines, e.g. musicology, a solid analysis in terms of the philosophy of science on the possibilities and limits of music sociology, and a highly topical discussion about the significance of intrinsic artistic aspects in music sociology.

Kurt Blaukopf (1914-1999) gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Musiksoziologen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ausgehend von einer empiristischen Tradition österreichischer Kunst- und Kulturforschung begründete Blaukopf die «Wiener Schule der Musiksoziologie», zu deren Zielsetzung die interdisziplinäre Erforschung musikalischer Praxis unter besonderer Berücksichtigung ihrer musik-, kultur- und medienpolitischen Relevanz zählt. Der Band Was ist Musiksoziologie? versammelt eine Reihe der wichtigsten musiksoziologischen Texte von Kurt Blaukopf, die zwischen 1949 und 1997 entstanden sind. Sie geben nicht nur Aufschluss über die zentralen Charakteristika der österreichischen Tradition musiksoziologischen Denkens, sondern zeichnen auch deren Entstehung und Weiterentwicklung nach.

Bolzanos Arbeiten über Fragen der Ästhetik und Kunstphilosophie fanden - im Unterschied zu seinen Beiträgen zur Wissenschaftstheorie, Logik und Mathematik sowie zur Religionswissenschaft - bislang nicht die ihnen gebührende Aufmerksamkeit und Würdigung. In einem Brief an seinen Schüler Michael Fesl prophezeite Bolzano selbst nach Abschluß der ersten seiner zwei ästhetischen Abhandlungen, diese würde 'kein besseres Schicksal haben als alle meine Schriften, vielmehr ein ärgeres.' Zwar sind die beiden Abhandlungen 'Über den Begriff des Schönen' (1843) und 'Über die Einteilung der schönen Künste (1849) in einer modernen Ausgabe zugänglich, doch beschäftigen sich bis heute selbst innerhalb der Bolzano-Gemeinde nur wenige Forscher damit. Daß dies ein grobes Versäumnis darstellt, zeigt die vorliegende Studie, in der Bolzanos Texte im Lichte der Ergebnisse späterer Kunstforschung untersucht werden. Dabei zeigt sich, daß Bolzanos Gedanken und Methoden gerade vor dem Hintergrund theoretischer und künstlerischer Entwicklungen im 20. Jahrhundert überaus bedeutsam sind.
