Adam Czerniaków se narodil 30. listopadu 1880 ve Varšavě. V meziválečném období zastával řadu funkcí v polských i židovských politických, kulturních a hospodářských organizacích Po mnoho let byl členem rady varšavské židovské obce. Těsně před vstupem německé armády do zničené Varšavy ho primátor Starzyński jmenoval předsedou Židovské náboženské obce. Tuto funkci zastával až do své smrti v červnu 1942. Z historického i literárního hlediska představuje Czerniakowův Deník dokument prvořadého významu. Kromě informací nezměrné historické ceny je rovněž svědectvím o autorově vnitřním životě, o jeho postojích, myšlenkách a pocitech. Vážnost a tragika chvílemi hraničí s groteskností, ironií a vtipem, který často vzhledem k hrůznosti faktů, jichž se týká, překvapí. Deník, psaný formou lakonických, místy nesouvislých a útržkovitých poznámek, tvoří jako celek dílo nebývalé dramatické sdělnosti. Poznámky, které autor zapisuje pravidelně den po dni od 6. září 1939 do 23. července 1942, jsou nejen autentickým pramenem historie jedné z největších hrůz druhé světové války – varšavského ghetta, ale i obrazem tragického osudu člověka, který stál v čele varšavské židovské komunity a osaměle aktivně čelil krutostem doby.

Als Adam Czerniakow am 23.9.1939 zum Vorsitzenden der Warschauer Jüdischen Kultusgemeinde ernannt wurde, war er sich der Schwere der Aufgabe bewusst, aber er ahnte nicht, welche Bürde, welch übermenschliche Anstrengungen ihm dieses Amt auferlegen würde. In winziger Schrift notierte er fast drei Jahre lang, was er sah, was er miterlebte, was er tat. Sein Tagebuch ist ein einzigartiges Dokument der Machtlosigkeit gegenüber der deutschen Schreckensherrschaft, aber auch des Muts und der Menschlichkeit in einer ausweglosen Lage. Als Czerniakow erkannte, dass all seine Bemühungen fruchtlos waren und er gezwungen wurde, die Deportationen in die Todeslager selbst zu organisieren, nahm er sich das Leben.
