Michael Schmid

Did Desert Shield lead to Desert Hate? A Case Study of Anti-Americanism in Saudi Arabia
First steps in the middle east - how concerns about communism and orientalist perceptions shaped U.S. policy towards Iran in the 1950s
A blanc check for intervention - the evolution of the Monroe Doctrine and its significance in contemporary U.S. foreign policy
Narrative memory and the impact of trauma on individuals with reference to one short sequence from Memento
The Just Cause: How the American Public supports War
History and philosophy of the media
    • The analysis contrasts two approaches to market research: focusing on consumer behavior versus understanding the environmental context in which consumers operate. Citing Eric J. Arnold, the authors of "Elusive Consumption" advocate for studying the "water" rather than just the "fish," emphasizing that consumer interactions with market forces are best evaluated through their surroundings. While some critics argue for a more behavior-centric approach, the book delves into defining the consumer's environment and its impact on consumption patterns, based on extensive research.

    • The paper explores the evolution of public opinion polling in America, highlighting its significance in understanding the public's sentiment towards government policies, especially in foreign affairs and military operations. It discusses the historical challenges faced in gauging public mood due to technological limitations and the emergence of scientific polling with the establishment of the Gallup poll in 1935. The paper contrasts the accuracy of Gallup's predictions during the 1936 presidential election with those of the Literary Digest, emphasizing the importance of representative sampling in polling methods.

The Just Cause: How the American Public supports War
    • Focusing on the exploration of memory processing and trauma, this seminar paper discusses the contributions of Jean Martin Charcot and Pierre Janet, as presented in Bessel Van der Kolk and Onno Van der Hart's work, The Intrusive Past. It highlights how traumatic memories impact consciousness and collective imagery, delving into the cultural implications of these psychological insights. The paper, graded highly at the Free University of Berlin, reflects on the interplay between trauma and cultural memory within American studies.

Narrative memory and the impact of trauma on individuals with reference to one short sequence from Memento
    • The paper examines the enduring significance of the Monroe Doctrine, which turns 200 in 2023, highlighting its impact on U.S. foreign policy from its inception under President James Monroe to its evolution with Theodore Roosevelt's 1904 Corollary. It discusses how the original doctrine shaped America's role as a dominant force in international relations and explores the stark contrasts between the historical context of its announcement and today's geopolitical landscape. The analysis reflects on the implications of these policies in contemporary politics.

A blanc check for intervention - the evolution of the Monroe Doctrine and its significance in contemporary U.S. foreign policy
    • Focusing on U.S. involvement in the Middle East, this seminar paper explores the historical roots of current conflicts, particularly regarding Iran. It delves into the complexities of U.S. foreign policy shaped by perceptions and issues that emerged during the early interactions with the region. The analysis highlights the significance of ongoing tensions, such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iran's nuclear ambitions, emphasizing the necessity of understanding these origins to address contemporary diplomatic challenges.

First steps in the middle east - how concerns about communism and orientalist perceptions shaped U.S. policy towards Iran in the 1950s
    • The book offers a critical analysis of Arab/Islamic anti-American sentiment in Saudi Arabia, particularly in the context of the Gulf War and the subsequent presence of US troops. It investigates whether reactions to American military presence stem from genuine anti-Americanism or reflect other underlying issues. Utilizing a range of Arabic and American sources, including perspectives from Saudi opposition leaders, the study explores dominant themes in the discourse surrounding American soldiers in the region, providing a nuanced understanding of the sentiments involved.

Did Desert Shield lead to Desert Hate? A Case Study of Anti-Americanism in Saudi Arabia
    • The thesis explores the intersection of culture and geography within American Studies, focusing on how cultural practices and geographical contexts influence each other. Conducted at the Free University of Berlin, it presents an analytical framework for understanding American cultural dynamics through applied geographic principles. The research contributes to the academic discourse by examining specific case studies, ultimately highlighting the significance of spatial awareness in cultural analysis.

Whats behind all the Hate? The Truth about Arab/Islamic Antagonism towards the United States
    • The paper explores the complex and often ambiguous world of espionage within international relations, emphasizing its significant yet unclear impact on historical events and contemporary issues. It highlights the inherent secrecy of intelligence operations and the ongoing debate among historians regarding the role and influence of intelligence agencies on policymaking. The discussion is contextualized by recent controversies, particularly the intelligence community's involvement in the lead-up to the Iraq war, illustrating the enduring relevance of these questions in today's political landscape.

Is the history of intelligence the secret history of the twentieth century, or just a good spy yarn?

    • The chicken has long been a model organism for genetic and developmental studies. It is now beginning to take its place as a model genome, opening up the fields of phylogenetics and comparative genomics like never before. This report comes at a time of huge technological advances (particularly in sequencing methodologies) and summarizes the current efforts to complete the gaps in the genome. It describes the progress that has been made in genomic annotation, particularly with respect to noncoding RNAs and genetic variants. Reviews of comparative genomics, avian evolution and sex determination are included as well as transcriptomic case studies and developments in epigenetic studies. The Third Report on Chicken Genes and Chromosomes also features the National Avian Research Facility and how it has developed into a resource for the study of avian biology, genetics, infection and disease. In this volume researchers interested in genetics, genomics and evolution will find detailed information that has not been available until now.
