Román Profesionál má mnoho autobiografických čŕt. Spisovateľ nás zoznamuje s osudmi Nika Hercega, populárneho televízneho reportéra, ktorý pri nakrúcaní seriálu jedného augustového dňa roku 1974 sa ponorí pod hladinu mora pri ostrove Lastovo a vynorí sa v Sarajeve roku 1947. To, čo sa odohráva medzi týmito rokmi, tvorí fabulu románu. Sú to Nikove predstavy a túžby mladého chlapca, jeho prvá láska - poetický príbeh prekvapujúci tvrdosťou reality, pôsobiaci však veľmi prirodzene. Znovu v něm ožívají události války a osvobození, vzpomínky na mrtvé rodiče, nešťastná láska k židovské dívce i vděčnost k muslimské služce, která mu zachránila život. Ve vzpomínkách vystupují detailně prokreslené postavy, bizarní atmosféra i kolorit Sarajeva, města na rozhraní Orientu a Evropy, kde vedle sebe žije pravoslavná, katolická, muslimská i židovská víra.
