In hun fameuze dagboeken deden EDMOND [1822-1896] en JULES [1830-1870] DE GONCOURT op levendige wijze verslag van het culturele en literaire leven in Parijs in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw. Minder bekend is dat de broers ook veel over kunst hebben gepubliceerd en een aantal romans hebben geschreven: in 1867 verscheen MANETTE SALOMON, een roman over kunst, hartstocht en onvermogen. Deze roman kan gezien worden als een kroniek van het Parijse kunstenaarsleven in de periode 1840-1865. Rond 1840 leren vier jongemannen elkaar kennen in het prestigieuze atelier van de historieschilder Langibout. In 155 hoofdstukjes leeft en lijdt de lezer met ze mee, is getuige van hun wederwaardigheden, hun successen, hun mislukkingen, hun fortuin, hun miserie. De roman beslaat een periode van 25 jaar, waarin de levens van de vier soms parallel lopen, ze elkaar uit het oog verliezen en ook weer tegen het lijf lopen. De naamgeefster van het boek doet eerst halverwege de roman haar intrede. Hoofdfiguur is de gedreven schilder Coriolis, een verfijnde estheet van rijke, aristocratische komaf. Wanhopig op zoek naar een geschikt model voor een stagnerend werk ontwaart hij Manette Salomon in een omnibus. Deze eigengereide jonge vrouw wordt zijn model, zijn muze, zijn maîtresse, zijn vrouw en de moeder van zijn zoon. Maar langzaam maar zeker neemt Manette de regie over Coriolis' leven over: zij bepaalt waar, wat en hoe hij moet schilderen, ze vervreemdt hem van zijn vrienden en doodt uiteindelijk zijn talent en zijn creativiteit. Anatole, een talentvolle, maar gemakzuchtige tekenaar, vol grappen, grollen en fratsen, en altijd in geldnood, is Coriolis' vriend. De middelmatige Garnotelle is een harde werker, streber, intrigant en netwerker avant la lettre en weet tot de hogere kringen door te dringen.
