Gilbert Ryle was een Britse filosoof, bekend om zijn kritiek op het dualisme van lichaam en geest, waarvoor hij de term "de geest in de machine" bedacht. Voortbouwend op Wittgensteins inzichten in taal, betoogde Ryle dat filosofische problemen geen problemen over speciale entiteiten zijn, maar voortkomen uit linguïstische verwarring. Hij vergeleek de taak van de filosoof met die van een cartograaf, die praktische kennis vertaalt naar universele cartografische termen. Filosofen analyseren daarom "implicatie-draden" van woorden en zinnen in uitspraken om hun ware betekenis en relaties te achterhalen.
