Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, the story follows Thomas McIntyre, a skilled con man and card shark who intercepts a soldier's payroll intended for the Army of the Potomac. With a past rooted in the streets of New York City, he employs morally ambiguous tactics to gamble his way across the country to Virginia City, Nevada. As he returns to Jefferson County, West Virginia, to reclaim his ill-gotten gains, he discovers that only one person is aware of his true intentions, setting the stage for intrigue and confrontation.
