Internet and social media have become essential in daily life, particularly as reliance on mobile communication devices grows. This trend extends to crisis situations, where individuals may engage as witnesses, bystanders, or victims. For First Responders (FRs) and Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) organizations, recognizing this shift is crucial. They must develop procedures and tools to integrate mobile online communication as an essential channel for information exchange during emergencies. The iSAR+ project focused on creating guidelines that empower citizens to actively participate in crisis response efforts using mobile and online technologies. These guidelines facilitate the bi-directional sharing and retrieval of vital information for effective PPDR interventions, including search and rescue and medical assistance. The aim is to ensure a seamless integration of iSAR+ solutions into existing PPDR operational concepts, addressing technological, organizational, ethical, legal, and human factors. To validate its concepts, iSAR+ demonstrated a technological platform through interactive exercises, employing a spiral model of system design that allowed for successful iterations. The main findings and results of the iSAR+ project are compiled in this comprehensive work.
Terrorism poses a persistent threat to modern societies, with significant incidents over the past 25 years, including the World Trade Center attack, Oklahoma City bombing, and the Boston bombing, primarily utilizing conventional explosives. However, the potential for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) terrorism, though less frequently highlighted, remains a serious concern, as evidenced by events like the Tokyo subway sarin attack in 1995. Effective communication with the public during a CBRN crisis is crucial for raising awareness of potential dangers and preventing the spread of misinformation. This book offers valuable insights and recommendations for communication experts in the CBRN field. It emphasizes that a timely and adequate response to major CBRN incidents—whether industrial or malicious—requires thorough preparation, training, and the establishment of trust between crisis managers, the public, and the media. By providing communication guidelines, this work aims to enhance crisis management and foster collaboration among stakeholders, ultimately improving public safety and response efforts. Carlos Rojas-Palma, Ph.D., highlights the importance of these strategies in building trust and ensuring effective communication during crises.
Mediating Orientalism in Contemporary Arab American Life Writing
Media depictions of Arabs and Muslims continue to be framed by images of camels, belly dancers, and dagger-wearing terrorists. But do only Hollywood movies and TV news have the power to frame public discourse? This interdisciplinary study transfers media framing theory to literary studies to show how life writing (re-)frames Orientalist stereotypes. The innovative analysis of the post-9/11 autobiographies »West of Kabul, East of New York«, »Letters from Cairo«, and »Howling in Mesopotamia« makes a powerful claim to approach literature based on a theory of production and reception, thus enhancing the multi-disciplinary potential of framing theory.
In recent years, we have witnessed a range of serious emergencies and disasters across Europe and the world, including terrorist incidents such as the World Trade Center attack in New York on 11 September 2001, the Madrid train bombings in March 2004, the London Underground and bus bombings of July 2005, the Turkish bombing campaign of August 2006, earthquakes in Turkey and Japan and devastating fires including the Rhode Island disco fire of 2003 and the Kamyshevatskaya (Russia) Nursing Home fire of 2007. Did culture play a role in determining how the people in these events responded? The results demonstrated in the BeSeCu book demark first steps in order to improve the planning of emergency/disaster management and evacuations as well as for informing future research. “The rarity with which people experience emergencies […] underscores the value of learning from survivors’ real life experiences during such events and in turn designing effective tests based upon this. Quality of life (QoL) assessment in children with chronic health conditions and disabilities must be age-appropriate and address both health-related and disease-specific concerns in a balanced manner. The DISABKIDS modular approach has effectively addressed these challenges in international pediatric QoL research by offering modules tailored for specific age groups and health conditions while also being applicable across various subgroups. Developed through a European cross-cultural multi-centre study, the DISABKIDS questionnaires enable comparisons of different conditions across diverse healthcare systems and facilitate multinational clinical studies. The DISABKIDS teams employed a simultaneous approach to cross-cultural instrument development, ensuring the measures' applicability across cultures. This handbook provides essential user information, including psychometrics and reference data, necessary for applying the DISABKIDS questionnaires. The authors include a diverse group of experts from various fields, contributing to the comprehensive nature of this resource.
