Die beiden Beiträge thematisieren die Codierung semantischer Relationen durch syntaktische Relationen und die grammatische Reflexion von Partizipantenkonstellationen. Die Analysen kombinieren funktionale und strukturelle Ansätze. Christian Lehmann und Yong-Min Shin verfolgen die onomasiologische Perspektive und behandeln die Versprachlichung instrumentaler und komitativer Relationen in verschiedenen Sprachen wie Englisch, Deutsch, Hmong und Yukatekisch. Sie entwickeln einen Rahmen zur typologischen Untersuchung der Konkomitanz und unterscheiden zwischen spezifischen Partizipantenrelationen wie Partner, Begleiter und Werkzeug. Die syntaktische Kodierung von Konkomitanten variiert je nach Funktion und Eigenschaften wie Belebtheit. Christian Lehmann und Elisabeth Verhoeven nehmen die semasiologische Perspektive ein und behandeln die syntaktische Kodierung peripherer Partizipanten in inkorporativen Strukturen. Sie kontrastieren Substantivinkorporation im Yukatekischen mit ähnlichen Prozessen in anderen Sprachen, wobei festgestellt wird, dass im Yukatekischen Inkorporation stärker zur Neuanordnung von Partizipanten genutzt wird. Ein Vergleich mit anderen Mayasprachen zeigt, dass diese Inkorporation im Yukatekischen eine Besonderheit innerhalb der Sprachfamilie darstellt.
Two types of syntactic structures are postulated, one of person prominence, which is present in Standard Average European (SAE) languages, following Benjamin L. Whorf's term, and one of relation prominence, which is present in Yucatec Maya. The diverse structural manifestations of the two types and their implications for the organization of grammar are explored within eight mostly unrelated languages, English, German, Korean, Lezgian, Maori, Samoan, Tamil, and Yucatec Maya. The syntactic organization in different grammatical areas, namely modal and phase operator constructions, possessive constructions, experiential constructions, and benefactive constructions, is investigated and the languages are arranged on a continuum of person and relation prominence. The study is intended for typologists, descriptive linguists and mayanists, but may as well be of interest to philologists of any of the other languages. Christian Lehmann is professor for general and comparative linguistics at the University of Erfurt. He mainly attends to the study of language typology and the description of Yucatec Maya. Yong-Min Shin is writing his dissertation thesis on 'Possessive and participant relations in German and Korean' at the University of Bielefeld. Elisabeth Verhoeven is writing her thesis on 'Experiencer constructions in Yucatec Maya' at the same University.
After a short review of the history of research, the work introduces and delimits the concepts related to grammaticalization. It then provides extensive exemplification of grammaticalization phenomena in diverse languages, ordered by grammatical domains such as the verbal, pronominal and nominal sphere and clause level relations. The final chapter presents a theory of grammaticalization which is based on the autonomy of the linguistic sign with respect to the paradigmatic and syntagmatic axes. This is the basis of the structural parameters that constitute grammaticalization. They are operationalized to the point of rendering degrees of grammaticalization measurable. The present edition contains corrections of the 1995 edition.
