Wolfgang Laib's extraordinarily concentrated installations are touching in an immediate and fundamental way, perhaps because they also address various levels of early childhood consciousness. Beeswax tunnels are redolent with an overwhelming scent of sweet honey and pollen; powdery piles of pollen are such a luminous yellow that you want to put your hands in them and play. Visitors to the installations are opened up, become aware of the energetic presence of the natural materials shown, and are prepared for a spiritual and intellectual encounter with the work's symbolic content. This retrospective monograph establishes the unique position and great power of Laib's work.

Die meditativen Arbeiten von Wolfgang Laib zählen durch ihre charakteristischen Qualitäten wie Einfachheit der Formensprache, Reinheit der verwendeten Materialien und greifbaren spirituellen Gehalt sicherlich zu den beeindruckendsten Produkten deutscher Künstler der Gegenwart. Sein Werk Ohne Ort, ohne Zeit, ohne Körper wurde als Dauerleihgabe der OEW dem Museum Villa Rot übergeben, welches das Leitmotiv 'Begegnung der Kulturen' führt. Wolfgang Laib nahm dies zum Anlass, seine eigenen Werke indischen und tibetischen Kunstwerken gegenüberzustellen und sie in einer Ausstellung zu verbinden. Der Band dokumentiert diese ungewöhnliche Begegnung und präsentiert neben vom Künstler ausgewählten Zitaten aus den Upanishaden und dem Tao-Te-King etwa eine südindische Shiva-Statue aus dem 10.-11. Jahrhundert Seite an Seite mit einem Milchstein, einem Werk aus Blütenstaub, Bienenwachsschiffen, Reismahlzeiten, einer Treppe aus schwarzem Burmalack, fotografischen Arbeiten sowie Installationsaufnahmen der Präsentation im Museum. Opposite the Pic du Canigou, the holy mountains of the Catalonians, Wolfgang Laib had a rock chamber chiselled out of granite to create a sapiritual room. Inside visitors are confronted by nature and their relationship to it. This book provides an impression of the landscape and the work within.
