Concerns about the future have been expressed differently throughout history. This book explores the historical context surrounding various debates, decisions and beliefs about the future in recent centuries. Religious, political, literary and ecological visions of the future in America and Germany are addressed comparatively. In particular, scholars from the United States and Germany explore the meaning of eschatological and utopian thoughts pursued during the last three centuries and tackle subjects ranging from science fiction to religious radicalism, utopian social experiments, and visions of race relations. This book delves into the hopes and fears for the future that have shaped the past and will be of interest to comparative historians as well as to historians of Europe and the United States intrigued by the subject of utopias.

This book responds to the frequently heard call for more comparative history .It does so by focusing on the problem of reconstruction in the national experience of the United States and Germany during three crucial 1865-1945-1989. Accordingly, a group of internationally recognized experts was recruited to present their views on such themes as general problems of Reconstruction, on social issues such as race, class, and gender; on the question of war criminals and denazification and of national identity, sectionalism and regionalism.

Von den afrikanischen Hochkulturen über die wirtschaftliche und demografische Entwicklung in Britisch-Nordamerika, den Bürgerkrieg und die Abschaffung der Sklaverei bis hin zu Bürgerrechtsbewegung und Black Power spannen die Autoren den Bogen der Geschichte. Sie porträtieren »African Americans« nicht als wehrlose Opfer, sondern als handelnde Subjekte und lassen sie mit Hilfe von umfangreichem Quellenmaterial selbst zu Wort kommen.

Publikacja jest wynikiem projektu dotyczącego oświadczenia podpisanego przez rektora Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego Marka Bojarskiego oraz Axela Freimutha, rektora Uniwersytetu w Kolonii. Oświadczenie było symbolicznym upamiętnieniem naukowców pochodzenia żydowskiego relegowanych z uczelni i pozbawionych tytułów naukowych przez nazistów z powodów dyskryminacji rasowej. Była to też okazja do przypomnienia, że uniwersytety powinny być wolne od wszelkiej ideologii, gdyż tradycyjnie rozumiany universitas opiera się przede wszystkim na wolności nauki i dydaktyki.

Der historische Kontext von nicht-binären und monströsen Körpern wird umfassend analysiert, wobei Norbert Finzsch die diskriminierenden Praktiken in Großbritannien, Frankreich, Deutschland und den USA von 1500 bis 2023 beleuchtet. Trotz regionaler Unterschiede zeigen sich in der Wahrnehmung von Abjekten gemeinsame kulturelle und soziale Ängste vor Veränderungen. Diese Ängste führten zur Stigmatisierung und Charakterisierung von Abjekten als "Monster", wodurch die Wurzeln der Transphobie in der westlichen Gesellschaft sichtbar werden.

Der vorliegende interdisziplinär angelegte Band vereinigt Beiträge von Historiker*Innen, Literaturwissenschaftler*Innen, Soziolog*Innen und Aktivistin*Innen aus dem Bereich der Queer- und Gender Studies. Die Geschichte der Sexualitäten und der Körperpraktiken stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt. In fünf Großkapiteln werden die Komplexe Identitäten, Männlichkeiten, Diskriminierung/Verfolgung, Diskurse und Emanzipation untersucht. Der erforschte Zeitraum reicht von der griechischen Antike bis zur unmittelbaren Gegenwart. Die hier zusammengetragenen Ergebnisse sind das Resultat einer internationalen wissenschaftlichen Konferenz, die anlässlich der Magnus-Hirschfeld-Tage 2014 in Köln stattgefunden hat.
