This book explores the history of spatial planning in Western Europe from 1945 to 1975, addressing the aftermath of two world wars and the pursuit of a better future through social welfare, democracy, and European integration. It also examines the challenges posed by its colonial legacy and competition with governmental planning.

      A New Beginning?
    • The countries of South, Southeast and East Asia are looking for new forms of cooperation with each other: politically, culturally, economically and in terms of energy policy. They have undergone enormous change, especially in the last 30 years, and are now in the process of replacing North America and Western Europe as global leadership regions. Along the way, they are repositioning themselves and have so far refused to be included in a renewed division of the world into power blocs. In contrast, they are striving to place cooperation on a new, multilateral basis. This volume illustrates this development by focusing on Vietnam, but while also examining other countries in the fascinating region from India to Indonesia and Japan.

    • E-government and its link to administrative reforms are seen as crucial for e-democracy and e-participation, yet remain underexplored. This book investigates the potential of e-government through a pilot study in Germany and Vietnam, despite the stark differences in their political systems. The results from the German-Vietnamese working group are surprising, revealing disappointing findings regarding e-government and service quality in both countries. Questions arise about the actual benefits for citizens. In Germany, skepticism prevails about e-government's role in enhancing political participation and deliberation. Conversely, the Vietnamese perspective is more optimistic, viewing e-democracy, e-participation, and efforts against environmental pollution and corruption as promising. This disparity may stem from the significant developmental leap Vietnam has made through information and communications technology compared to Germany. The study highlights the contrasting views on e-government's effectiveness and its implications for citizen engagement in both nations, emphasizing the need for further investigation into its role in fostering democratic processes and administrative efficiency.

E-Government and administrative reform in Germany and Vietnam
    • This study is the first to analyse the manifold interrelations between armed conflicts and the human and natural environments both historically and sociologically. While most research to date has dealt with this topic primarily with regard to environmental destruction caused by acts of war or armament in peacetime, this publication goes one step further by highlighting the historical changes to this complex interrelationship with concrete examples: from the Second World War in Europe and Asia via the classic proxy war in Vietnam to the current asymmetric wars in South Asia. At the same time, it focuses on systematic questions: How do environments influence armed conflicts? How do wars change environments? And how do complete ‘war landscapes’ (warscapes) emerge, in which war and militarisation permanently change the relations between people and their environment? With contributions by Detlef Briesen, Anthony Goreau-Ponceaud, David Pickus, Sarada Prasanna Das, Nguyen Thi Hanh, Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, Dao Duc Thuan/Nguyen Van Ngoc, Tim Kaiser, Dam Thi Phuong Thuy/Nguyen Van Bac, Brigitte Sébastia, Manish Tiwari, Babu Rangaiah/Kumaresan Raja, Martin Dinges.

    • Das gesunde Leben

Ernährung und Gesundheit seit dem 18. Jahrhundert
