    Basics
    • Basics is a collection of practice methods and exercises, and belongs on the music stand, not on the bookshelf. It can be used by players of all standards, from concert violinists to students. Much of the material is also suitable for teaching elementary players. Each exercise is designed to achieve the maximum possible result in the least possible time. Some are very short and need to be done only once or twice to explore a particular aspect of technique. Others are practice routines or warm-up exercises that can returned to regualarly. Basics is not a book to play through from cover to cover (though, for easy reference, the exercises are numbered sequentially throughout). Everybody's needs are different, and there is little point in practising anything that does not need to be practised. The book is invaluable, however, in its presentation of the most effective technical work in a single volume, making it possible to work directly on any aspect of technique that needs attention.

Focusing on the often-overlooked elements of viola technique, this book introduces a groundbreaking method developed by Simon Fischer. It goes beyond traditional scale practice, offering a comprehensive set of exercises designed to enhance ear sensitivity, mental engagement, and physical skills for violists. Each exercise aims to refine technique and foster a deeper understanding of the instrument, making it a valuable resource for players seeking to elevate their performance.

    • After a fantastic RapidMiner World in Boston in 2014, we are happy to be back with our user conference in Europe, and in particular in beautiful Ljubljana, Solvenia. The new name, RapidMiner Wisdom, also comes with a few changes that we hope will make the conference even more enjoyable for you. First and most obvious, the schedule is condensed to two days, August 31st and September 1st, 2015. On the first day, everything revolves around training, enablement, and certification for our users and partners. Plus, to get you in the right mood for day two, we will have another edition of our now famous live data mining game show, “Who Wants to be a Data Miner?” where you can compete by using RapidMiner to solve problems it was never supposed to solve and win great prizes. The second day has many great presentations from our community, covering use cases solved with RapidMiner and novel extensions. This year, we have a focus on applications from the health care domain. The series of presentations is kicked off by a keynote from Mike Ferguson, managing director of Intelligent Business Strategies. Furthermore, Lars Bauerle, RapidMiner’s CPO, and myself will bring you the latest News from the Labs, showing our most recent and future innovations.

    • Because of costs and scarcity, datasets are often highly imbalanced, with a large majority class and a far smaller minority class. Typical examples of imbalanced datasets are healthy versus diseased tissue measurements, lawful versus criminal banking transactions, and correctly priced versus mispriced financial instruments. Constructing classifiers from imbalanced data presents significant theoretical and practical challenges. Validation is also affected by imbalance, as a trivial classifier that ignores its input and always predicts the majority class will appear prescient. This presentation surveys class imbalance from a conceptual perspective, and empirically investigates several RapidMiner approaches to constructing classifiers from imbalanced data. Finally, the presentation describes a set of broadly applicable RapidMiner processes that detect, construct, and evaluate classifiers with imbalanced data.

    • The third RapidMiner Community Meeting and Conference (RCOMM 2012) was held in Budapest, Hungary. Topics covered in the proceedings include various new extensions for supervised and unsupervised learning, building recommender systems, operating on images, text, and data streams, and combining RapidMiner with scripting languages. It also contains an introduction of Matthew North's new book „Data Mining for the Masses“.

    • Welcome to the Second RapidMiner Community Meeting and Conference in Dublin, Ireland. After the first RapidMiner conference held in Dortmund in September 2010, we moved the conference to mid June in 2011 due to collisions with other events. Despite of this resulting in a reduced preparation period, we received many excellent contributions again and selected fourteen for presentation during the conference and for publication in these proceedings. As in 2010, submissions cover a wide range of topics, including machine learning, applications and use cases, and architecture. During the conference, various new RapidMiner extensions will be presented. Even manuscripts utilizing the new data mining server RapidAnalytics were submitted, which we were particularly pleased to see since only little more than three months lay between the public release of its first version and the paper submission deadline.
