This volume comprises papers from the Second International Workshop on Multi-agent-based Simulation (MABS-2000), held in conjunction with the Fourth International Conference on Multi Agent Systems (ICMAS-2000) in Boston in July 2000. MABS-2000 aimed to explore the synergy between software engineering for multi-agent systems and agent-based social simulation. The selected papers either investigate how agent interaction can construct multi-agent systems or provide problem-oriented examples, avoiding a focus on technique-oriented systems. No paper was included if it merely conformed to a pre-selected technique. Each paper has undergone review and, in many cases, revision since the workshop. Additionally, two papers by Edmonds and Hales, along with an editorial introduction, have been included. The editors and workshop organizers express gratitude to participants for their enthusiastic discussions on the papers and the broader challenges facing the MABS community, with key issues and positions highlighted in the editorial introduction. Appreciation is also extended to the authors for their responsiveness to editorial feedback and to Klaus Fischer, the ICMAS-2000 workshops chair, for his patience and diplomacy in managing the demands of the workshop alongside available resources.
