Political and business leaders in Indonesia are increasingly receptive to Western ideas, marking an unprecedented acculturation process focused mainly on urban areas. This work, published in 1987, presents a comprehensive overview of the Indonesian urban system, the first of its kind for Southeast Asia. With clear text, numerous tables and diagrams, and six color maps, it serves not only geographers, sociologists, and historians but also offers practical insights for business and regional planners. It provides an archipelago-wide assessment of urban population potentials, detailing the locations of development centers and their economic functions. Additionally, it highlights over 4,000 notable settlements beyond typical rural villages. Among Indonesia's 39 major cities, five date back to the Hindu Middle Ages, while 15 emerged under Islamic rule, another 15 during colonial times, and four in the current century. Many Javanese cities retain cultural elements from their historical roots, such as the old ruler’s residence (kraton) and well-planned squares (alun-alun). The suburbs are predominantly occupied by "kampungs," where modern developments are encroaching on traditional spaces. Urban planning faces significant challenges in this context. This work appeals to a diverse audience, including geographers, ethnographers, linguists, politicians, and historians.
