Meer over het boek
This special issue follows part I of Perspectives in Glaucoma Research that has appeared in Vol. 210/5/96 of Ophthalmologica and features up-to-the minute research from pioneering scientists in the field. The first topic deals with the potential role of the TIGR protein which is expressed by trabecular cells under both corticosteroid and other stress conditions. The latest promising results about the structure of that protein and the identification of the gene that 'causes primary open-angle glaucoma' may open new avenues in research and could lead to the development of directed strategies with new therapeutic principles in the treatment of glaucomas. Among many other innovative ideas, the second main topic of the issue relates to the question on how sustained intraocular pressure elevation affects the vascular system of the choroid and retina. The presented articles shed new light on the functional interrelationship between these two systems and may provide a different perspective in understanding the essential pathologic processes in glaucomatous diseases.
