This book presents the key findings of the German project POPINDA, which focused on advancing industrial aerodynamic design simulations on parallel systems. Initiated in late 1993, the project involved approximately 12 scientists working full-time over three and a half years, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF). The primary objectives were to unify and parallelize the block-structured aerodynamic flow codes used in the German aircraft industry and to develop new algorithmic strategies to enhance the efficiency and robustness of these applications. The underlying philosophy is that complex numerical tasks, such as predicting 3D viscous flow around full aircraft, can only be effectively addressed by leveraging modern high-performance computing and fast numerical solvers. This integration is essential for tackling more intricate applications, including aerodynamic design optimization and fluid-structure interaction problems, which necessitate significant reductions in computing time within standard industrial processes. Over the past 15 years, advancements in parallel and vector computing, along with innovative numerical algorithms like multigrid, have led to remarkable improvements in scientific computing capabilities.
