The International Conference TSD 2005, the eighth in the series on Text, Speech, and Dialogue, showcased advancements in natural language processing and aimed to serve as an interdisciplinary forum. It combined research in speech and language processing with practical applications, highlighting the dynamic contributions from researchers, including those from developing countries. Financial support from the ISCA (International Speech Communication Association) facilitated broad participation from global researchers. This year’s conference emphasized multi-modal human-computer interaction (HCI), a highly relevant topic today. It explored a rich array of communicative activities, including facial expressions, hand gestures, and gaze direction, all of which influence the interpretation of user utterances based on context and prosody. Effective communication requires hearers to adapt to speakers, maintaining conversational themes and responding with appropriate non-verbal cues. However, research on the interaction of these communication channels remains limited, often focusing on pairs of channels rather than a comprehensive approach. Keynote speakers presented six significant scientific results from the USA, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, and the Czech Republic in special plenary sessions, further enriching the discussions at the conference.
