Irreversible quantum dynamics

The present volume in the Lecture Notes in Physics series was inspired by the “Conference on Irreversible Quantum Dynamics” held at The Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, from July 29 to August 2, 2002. This conference aimed to unite researchers interested in irreversibility and time asymmetry in quantum mechanics, fostering open discussions on various perspectives regarding quantum irreversibility and the methodologies for studying it. Key themes included: Theoretical Aspects of Quantum Irreversible Dynamics, Open Quantum Systems and Applications, Foundational Aspects of Irreversible Quantum Dynamics, and Asymmetric Time Evolution and Resonances. Each theme featured reviews by experts, along with shorter, research-focused talks. The topic of quantum irreversibility has long captivated interest, particularly regarding unstable systems and quantum measurement. Recent advancements in noise, dissipation, and open systems have been significantly influenced by the evolving fields of quantum communication and information theory. These developments motivated the editors to compile this volume, aiming to summarize the current research landscape and provide readers with an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the subject.
