This volume presents three comprehensive papers on the mushroom genus Lentinellus KARSTEN, known for its rich diversity in Europe and North America. It covers taxonomy, morphology, biogeography, and phylogeny based on ribosomal sequences, summarizing findings from worldwide collections. A total of twenty-four species are accepted, with discussions on nomina incertae sedis, Species Rejicienda, type specimens, and typification issues. Notably, one species (L. castoreus) is reported as cosmopolitan, while two are circum-North Temperate (L. micheneri, L. ursinus) and two are Gondwanan (L. novae-zelandiae, L. pulvinulus); the remaining species have restricted distributions. The examination of type specimens, both macro- and micromorphologically, contributes to stabilizing nomenclature and accurately categorizing specimens within their taxa. A phylogenetic reconstruction based on ribosomal ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 DNA sequences identifies several infrageneric clades, with distinct separation of some species (e.g., L. ursinus, L. castoreus). Others, separable by morphological or sexual traits, are grouped (e.g., L. micheneri, L. subaustralis). The volume also details robust phylogenies for L. castoreus and L. ursinus, exploring their potential origins. Enhanced by thirteen color plates, it emphasizes key aspects of nomenclature, morphology, taxonomy, and phylogeny.
