Active Networks allow users to inject and execute programs in active nodes, enhancing network flexibility. This shift necessitates a new resource management mechanism, as current methods do not address resource guarantees for applications while considering the unique resource usage in active networks. Unlike traditional IP-based networks, resources like CPU and memory in active nodes must be carefully managed due to user-specific computations. The diversity of user programs can lead to imbalanced resource usage, potentially preventing computations from executing due to insufficient resources. Consequently, existing Internet resource management strategies are inadequate for active networks, requiring a more sophisticated approach. This work introduces a new resource management mechanism for active nodes, utilizing the concept of a resource vector to describe resource usage effectively. The adaptable resource vector space (ARVS) is proposed to capture the adaptability of applications and formulate a generic model for network adaptation, reflecting individual resource requirements. An adaptive admission control mechanism is designed to facilitate resource adaptation across different types of resources and applications, considering both application performance and overall resource utilization. An active node architecture has been implemented to support this admission control mechanism, managing resource usage within the active no
