Meer over het boek
Albert Socin (1844–1899), Professor of Semitic Studies in Basel, Tübingen, and Leipzig, embarked on his first significant journey to Islamic countries while still a student. He later spent extended periods in Syria and Palestine, primarily for research purposes, leading to important works on the Arabic language and its dialects. His grammar of Arabic remains well-known among students today. Following Socin's death, his student Hans Stumme published a three-volume anthology of poetry from Central Arabia, which Socin had been preparing during his lifetime. This anthology features over a hundred poems in a bilingual format, complete with Socin's translations. It is further enhanced by detailed metrical analyses and various glossaries and indices, elevating the work to the status of an academic resource. The anthology reveals the richness of Central Arabian literature, which has not always received the recognition it deserves, even from orientalists.
