Morphological and syntactic issues have been relatively overlooked in Functional Grammar, which has primarily focused on its pragmatic and semantic components. With these areas now well-developed, this book shifts attention to enhancing the syntactic and morphological aspects of the model. It highlights two significant developments: Bakker's Dynamic Expression Model and Hengeveld and Mackenzie's Functional Discourse Grammar. The former addresses the intricate interactions between expression rules concerning form and those governing order in various languages. The latter advances the notion that morphosyntactic and phonological representations are integral to the grammar's underlying structure, challenging earlier FG assumptions. The book includes synopses of these models and their applications to diverse linguistic phenomena. Additional articles offer in-depth analyses of semantic and pragmatic categories and their morphosyntactic expressions across approximately 60 languages, with focused discussions on Arabic, Danish, English, Lengua de Señas Española, Mapudungun, Plains Cree, and Tanggu. Collectively, the contributions illustrate that morphosyntactic expression in Functional Grammar is evolving and exploring promising new avenues, while enhancing our understanding of numerous morphosyntactic phenomena across a wide range of languages.
